When the nation's enemies endorse a candidate for president of the United States, voters should be concerned. Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi's June 11, 2008 endorsement of Senator Barack Obama on Al Jazeera should give us some pause.
Senator Obama should be given the chance to distance himself from Qaddafi's endorsement, as he has been given the chance to explain himself about his ties to unrepentant terrorists Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn.
Obama's June 4 speech to the American Israel Public Affairs Council (AIPAC), in which he claimed total support for Israel and even exceeded decades of US policy by calling for Jerusalem to be united as the Israeli capital, bothered Qaddafi. But rather than denounce the American presidential candidate, Qaddafi went easy on him, embracing him as a "brother," calling him a fellow "Muslim" who should be true to his "Islamic identity," and expressing hope that Obama was simply telling "lies" and "propaganda" so he could get elected.
After comparing American democracy to the regimes of Hitler, Mussolini and other dictators throughout history, Qaddafi stated:
There are elections in America now. Along came a black citizen of Kenyan African origins, a Muslim, who had studied in an Islamic school in Indonesia. His name is Obama. All the people in the Arab and Islamic world and in Africa applauded this man. They welcomed him and prayed for him and for his success, and they may even have been involved in legitimate contribution campaigns to enable him to win the American presidency. But we were taken by surprise when our African Kenyan brother, who is an American national, made statements that shocked all his supporters in the Arab world, in Africa, and in the Islamic world. We hope that this is merely an elections 'clearance sale,' as they say in Egypt – in other words, merely an elections lie. As you know, this is the farce of elections – a person lies and lies to people, just so that they will vote for him, and afterwards, when they say to him: 'You promised this and that,' he says: 'No, this was just elections propaganda.' This is the farce of democracy for you. He says: 'This was propaganda, and you thought I was being serious. I was fooling you to get your votes.'
Qaddafi invoked Allah in the hope that Obama's AIPAC speech was just electioneering for votes among American Jews: "Allah willing, it will turn out that this was merely elections propaganda. Obama said he would turn Jerusalem into the eternal capital of the Israelis. This indicates that our brother Obama is ignorant of international politics, and is not familiar with the Middle East conflict."
Again Qaddafi referred to Obama as a Muslim, and he called on the American presidential candidate to "take pride in his American and Islamic identity, and in his faith . . ." Here are Qaddafi's exact words:
We still hope that this black man will take pride in his African and Islamic identity, and in his faith, and that [he will know] that he has rights in America, and that he will change America from evil to good, and that America will establish relations that will serve it well with other peoples, especially the Arabs.
The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) provided the video clip of Qaddafi on Al Jazeera, so people can see and hear exactly what the Libyan leader said in the original Arabic. MEMRI also provided an English translation of the transcript. See for yourself.
